WhiteWater West's Slideboarding water slide wins Thea Award

WhiteWater West’ innovative Slideboarding experience was awarded a Thea Award for its pioneering technology. This is the second Thea for the company, which won its first award in 2001 for its L’Oxygenarium spinning rapids ride at Parc Asterix.

WhiteWater claims that its success can be attributed to two contributing factors, working with and employing talented people and establishing long-term relationships with its clients.

Invented by Denise Chapman Weston and billed as a real life gaming experience in a water slide, Slideboarding combines a traditional water slide experience with gaming and competitive sports.

Guests ride on interactive boards that sync with the slide to record points. Different coloured LED lights are placed at intervals in the slide, riders score points by pressing the corresponding colour on the handle of the board as they pass the light. When points are scored the handles vibrate. More points are awarded for accuracy.

The board is the first of its kind that is able to recognise the rider and is able to customise the ride, so guests receive a different experience every time.

Geoff Chutter, president and CEO of WhiteWater, said: "Guest expectations continue to grow for what a waterslide, an amusement slide, or a museum can be. WhiteWater has been focused on creating the most innovative and fun guest experiences for our clients' park for nearly 40 years, it's always nice and very humbling to be recognised by your peers for such work."
